Protecting Your Foot From Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that develops when uric acid builds up in the body and forms tiny crystals inside a joint. These sharp crystals trigger intense inflammation, causing sudden pain and swelling. The big toe is one of the most frequent locations for a gout attack, although the condition also can affect the ankle, heel, or other foot joints. Symptoms include severe pain, redness, and swelling that can develop within hours. The affected joint can become so sensitive that even light pressure causes discomfort. Without proper treatment, gout attacks can become more frequent and lead to lasting joint damage. In some patients, firm deposits of uric acid crystals, called tophi, can develop beneath the skin and affect foot function.

A podiatrist performs a detailed examination to determine whether gout is responsible for the pain. The evaluation includes checking the affected joint for swelling, tenderness, and changes in movement. The podiatrist also asks about previous attacks and reviews the patient's medical history. Imaging tests, like X-rays or ultrasound, can provide additional information about joint damage or crystal deposits. In some cases, a sample of fluid from the joint is examined to confirm the diagnosis. Identifying gout early allows treatment to begin before repeated attacks damage the joint or reduce mobility. A complete evaluation also helps distinguish gout from infections or other forms of arthritis that produce similar symptoms.

Treatment focuses on relieving pain, protecting the affected joint, and reducing the risk of future attacks. A podiatrist develops a treatment plan based on the severity of the condition and how it affects foot function. Care also includes custom orthotics when changes in foot structure or walking patterns place extra stress on painful joints. The podiatrist can recommend shoes that fit properly and provide good support to improve comfort while walking. Regular follow-up visits help monitor joint health and identify changes before they become more serious. If you have symptoms of gout, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.
