You have a continuous ache on the side of your left ankle. It worsens when you stand, walk or remain on your feet for extended periods of time. This ankle pain impacts your daily routines, and you need help. Dr. Brett Hintze of Foot and Ankle Reconstruction of North Georgia in Woodstock, GA diagnoses and treats all kinds of ankle pain. Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, he'll uncover the source of your discomfort and treat it precisely and compassionately.
Ankle pain and you
Maybe it started with that ankle sprain last summer when you played tennis. You followed the directions given by the ER doctor, but the ankle hasn't healed. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons says that the twisting motion that overstretched your ankle ligaments is the most common cause of acute (sudden) or chronic (continuous) ankle discomfort.
Left untreated, ankle immobility increases. Osteochondritis is an inflammation and swelling resulting from a separation of ankle cartilage from the bones in the lower leg and foot. The stiffness which accompanies your ankle pain could be osteochondritis.
Other causes of ankle pain
Your sore, stiff ankle could be suffering from age- or injury-related arthritis. Achilles tendonitis, affecting the connective tissue between the calf muscle and the heel, affects thousands of Americans annually as does tarsal tunnel syndrome, a compression injury of the nerve which runs along the back of the leg. Addtionally, poor alignment of the hips, knees, and ankle joints lead to persistent soreness in the ankle.
What you can do
See Dr. Hintze and his team. He will examine your foot and ankle, analyze your gait (how you walk) and take digital X-rays and other kinds of imaging as he determines. He'll also discuss your symptoms--when they start, your pain level, what aggravates them and what may relieve them.
Your individualized care plan depends on his diagnostic findings and may include:
- RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation)
- NSAIDS for management of pain and inflammation
- Cortisone injections for inflammation
- Physical therapy
While always a last resort, sometimes ankle surgery is warranted. Dr. Hintze is fully qualified to perform many kinds of foot and ankle surgeries in the least invasive and most technically advanced manner possible.
